Wrong-Way Driving Leads to Head-On Crash, Two Killed, One Child Seriously Injured in Chattanooga, Tennessee

WrongWay2

Terrible news of a wrong-way driver that caused a head-on car accident on Tennessee’s Interstate 75 hit news headlines on Tuesday morning, September 3, highlighting the dangers of wrong-way driving. According to local news reports, on the morning of Tuesday, September 3, and around 2:00 a.m., 37-year-old Kalyn Theobald drove her Nissan Sentra the wrong way down I-75 and hit a Honda Accord and its driver head-on. The head-on collision reportedly sent the Honda Accord spinning, and it was hit by a tractor trailer that was also traveling on the Interstate. The driver of the Honda Accord, 65-year-old Richard Howard Sadowitz, died at the scene of the tragic head-on car accident. A child, who was a passenger in the Nissan Sentra driven by Theobald, was seriously injured in the head-on car collision, and was transported to the hospital with “life-threatening” injuries. Details are still sparse as to why Theobald was driving the wrong way down the Interstate, and whether drugs and/or alcohol was involved in the terrible and fatal wrong-way head-on car accident. The investigation is still ongoing.

Wrong-Way Driving Presents Serious Threat to Tennessee Driver Health and Safety

There is no doubt that wrong-way driving is a serious threat to drivers in Tennessee. According to the National Council of State Legislatures, wrong-way driving, which is defined as driving where “a driver operates a vehicle the wrong way on a road or highway against the intended flow of traffic”, accounts for 3.7% of all fatal car accidents. This amounts to an average of around 500 deaths due to wrong-way driving on divided highways per year in the United States. Wrong-way driving can occur on virtually any type of roadway, and often driver confusion is found to be the reason for wrong-way driving. Because wrong-way driving accidents are often fatal accidents, it is important for Tennessee drivers to be alert for wrong-way drivers, and to understand that wrong-way driving accidents can and do happen on Tennessee roads.
