Two Lanes Blocked on Interstate 40 Close to West Hills

shutterstock_561735016

Knoxville, TN (January 12, 2021) Two lanes of Interstate 40 east are blocked close to West Hills following a traffic accident. Knoxville police report that the driver of a truck experienced a loss of several of the logs that the vehicle was carrying. Fortunately, no injuries are reported as a result of the accident. Several hours elapsed before the lanes opened again. Additional details about the crash including whether anyone was injured or killed, the extent of the property damage involved, and what caused the cargo to come loose remain uncertain.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has found that cargo shifts are one of the most frequently associated factors in large truck crashes. Shifting cargo, however, isn’t only the reason why logs can come loose from a truck. Some of the other reasons why logs can spill onto the road and create a hazard for motorists include improperly secured cargo, overloading trucks past the weight limit, failing to properly block or brace cargo, and using tie-downs of inadequate size or strength.
