Knoxville Motorcycle Accident Highlights Risks of Reckless Riding, Rights and Options of Motorcycle Accident Survivors Under Tennessee Personal Injury Laws

Motorcycle6

There is no doubt that for many Knoxville motorcycle enthusiasts, the motorcycle is much more than just a way to get around, but also represents freedom, fun, and adventure. Indeed, the motorcycle is not only a means to commute (and save gas while doing so), but also a way to explore, see the sights, and enjoy the open road. Unfortunately, however, motorcycle riding can be very dangerous, and motorcycle riders who are involved in motorcycle accidents are at greater risk of serious bodily injury and death, especially when larger vehicles are involved, such as trucks, sport utility vehicles, and vans. A recent motorcycle accident  in Knoxville underscores this point, and raises the question in the minds of motorcycle survivors and their families about what recourse there may be for motorcycle accident victims in Knoxville under Tennessee personal injury laws.

According to local news reports, on Sunday, September 15, two Knoxville residents and motorcycle enthusiasts were involved in a multi-vehicle car crash that took both of their lives. The victims, identified as 44-year-old Michaels Scates, of Knoxville, and Alecia Vigander, a 43-year-old Knoxville woman, were traveling on Cedar Lane at Central Avenue Pike when the fatal accident occurred. Police officers investigating the incident believe that the two motorcycle riders were riding recklessly when they collided with a box truck. The Knoxville Police Department released the following statement about the terrible accident, stating, “Based on the investigation conducted at the scene and witness statements, it is believed that the motorcycle was driving recklessly when it collided with the truck, which was nearly stopped and preparing to make a right turn at the time of the collision.”  However, video footage of this collision has called the police report’s conclusions into question. One of the victims of the motorcycle accident was pronounced dead at the accident scene, while the other succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital. The terrible and fatal accident is still under investigation.
