Knoxville Car Accident Victims Wonder What Options they Have for Justice after Knoxville Drag Race Kills 1, Injures 5 Others

A terrible and fatal 2023 car accident that occurred due to an illegal and dangerous drag race ended in the death of one person and the injury of 5 others, including young children, leading some Knoxville residents to question what recourse they may have if they are injured by another driver’s negligent, reckless, or even criminal actions. According to local news reports, in mid-January, 2023, a drag racing “incident” ended in a multi-vehicle car crash in East Knoxville, on Magnolia Avenue near Milligan Street. The terrible and senseless drag racing accident occurred when an orange Dodge Charger and a red Dodge Charger engaged in a street race down Magnolia Avenue and blew through a red light without stopping at Milligan Street. The Dodge Chargers collided with a white Ford Explorer as a result of the drag race and running the red light. The occupants of the white Ford Explorer included 65-year-old Michael Williams, who was the driver, an 11-year-old child, and a 5-year-old child. Williams, unfortunately, was seriously injured in the crash and he was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he, sadly, passed away. The two children who were also riding in the Ford Explorer were in “critical but stable condition” after the crash, and were also taken to the hospital. The other individuals that were involved in the drag race and car crash were identified as 21-year-old Trinity Clark and 20-year-old Tra’Shawn Glass. Glass was injured in the car accident and was taken to the hospital. Both of the individuals involved in the race were charged with felony reckless endangerment and drag racing, with additional charges pending, per reports.
In the accident, the orange Dodge Charger ended up not only injuring the three occupants of the Ford Explorer, but it also crashed into the Safe Haven Empowerment Center building. Lawrence Williams, a worker at Safe Haven Empowerment Center said of the crash, “What I’m feeling right now, you know, I’m just shocked…What about the people who are staying here that ain’t got nowhere else to go? Now what we got to do is put them up somewhere until we figure out what we are going to do about the Safe Haven.” A witness who saw the crash happen said of the horrible and fatal accident, “Prayers to the family…I turned around to the road and I saw these two, it was a red and an orange Charger speeding down the road.”
