Johnson City Man Killed in Kingsport Highway Tractor-Trailer Crash

Washington County, TN (December 7, 2020) A Johnson City man was killed in an accident on the night of December 7th in Washington County involving a stolen tractor-trailer. Based on a report provided by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the driver of the tractor-trailer was operating the vehicle erratically and fled from law enforcement by heading south without any headlights on. The driver ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 75, then crossed the centerline of traffic and struck a Saturn. Tragically, the Saturn’s driver was killed in the collision even though he was wearing his seatbelt. The tractor-trailer’s driver was injured in the collision. Charges as well as an investigation are currently pending against the driver of the stolen tractor-trailer.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that in 2018, 4,136 people died each year in large truck accidents. Sixteen percent of these fatalities were truck occupants, 67 percent were the occupants of cars, and 15 percent were pedestrians. Thei number of fatalities was 51 percent higher than the number of people who died from large truck crashes in 2019.
