Kingsport, TN (April 6, 2021) The Kingsport Police Department is investigating after an accident occurred on the morning of April 6th that left a pedestrian injured. Based on data provided by the Kingsport Police Department, officers responded to the 1100 block of East Center Street around 10:45 in the morning. The investigation later determined that an adult male pedestrian who is believed to have been chasing after a dog ran into the road and entered the path of an eastbound Toyota Camry. The Camry subsequently hit the pedestrian and caused serious injuries. The victim was later transported to a local hospital for treatment. While the vehicle did not have the right of way at the time the collision occurred, the pedestrian crossing was also not done legally at a designated crosswalk or intersection. The driver of the Camry was later placed under arrest for suspicion of a DUI. A more detailed investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that approximately 137,000 pedestrians in 2017 were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crashes. Per trip, pedestrians are also  1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a crash.
