Cumberland Crash Occurs on Interstate 40

Rolled

Cumberland County, TN (January 30, 2021) The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that the driver of a Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling east on the evening of January 30th on Interstate 40 between mile markers 325 and 340 when the vehicle exited the road, went down an embankment, and overturned. The driver involved in the crash later stated that he had passed over a slick spot and subsequently lost control of his vehicle.

A rollover is said to occur if a vehicle flips onto its side or roof at any time during an accident. Rollover can result from an impact with another vehicle or fixed objects. Many rollovers occur after vehicles leave the road and can result in occupants being ejected from vehicles, which greatly increases the chance of fatalities. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 6,583 passenger vehicle passengers died in rollover crashes in 2018. 72% of these rollovers involved accidents in which a vehicle collided with an object before the rollover. Vehicles like large trucks and sports utility vehicles are more likely to end up in rollover crashes due to their higher center of gravity.
