Amusement Park Rider’s Scary Cart Accident at Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster Highlights Risks Amusement Park Rides Can Present to Theme Park Goers in Tennessee

Amuse3

The 2021 Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster accident that flung an amusement park goer out of an amusement park ride cart into the air sends a chilling message to theme park and amusement park-goers across Tennessee about the risks that amusement park and theme park rides can present to park patrons. According to local news reports, in April, 2021, a patron of the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster, located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, was flung from a cart on the mountain coaster as the ride entered a curve right before the Kodak camera feature. The rider, who has not been identified to the public, was said to have been thrown 10 feet from the cart into the air. After hitting the ground, the rider was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries to the head, wrist, and ankle.

Surprisingly, the 2021 incident was not the first time that a rider was injured on the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster. In 2016, reports indicate that another woman was flung from the amusement park ride. The owner of the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is reported to have said that the woman had not been properly restrained in the ride, and that the ride had been going “too fast” when she was flung from it. The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is a popular tourist attraction in the Great Smoky Mountains, and its coaster can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The attraction winds through woody areas around trees and curves, taking around seven minutes, and riders can control their own speed on the track. Ultimately, the ride was deemed to meet industry standards after being shut down temporarily and inspected by the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
