Tractor-Trailers Collide on Interstate 40

Loudon County, TN (February 7, 2021) A collision between two tractor-trailers on Interstate 40 in Loudon County on the morning of February 7th resulted in no injuries. Due to the accident, however, eastbound traffic was closed for approximately two hours. The accident occurred when two tractor-trailer drivers slowed down for a nearby traffic crash. One of the drivers attempted to merge and allegedly failed to yield the right of way which resulted in a collision with the other tractor-trailer. Fortunately, both truck drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that truck braking capability is a factor in countless truck crashes. This is because loaded tractor-trailers take approximately 20 to 40 percent of additional room to stop. The distance that tractor-trailers need is even greater when roads are wet or trucks are equipped with inadequate breaks. Consequently, 4,136 individuals died in large truck accidents in 2018.  An even larger number of people were injured in truck crashes that occurred in 2018.
