Pursuit in Cumberland County Leads to Injuries

Cumberland County, TN (November 2, 2020) A pursuit involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol and a driver resulted in a multiple vehicle accident on November 2nd in Cumberland County. The accident involved a stolen Ford Fusion that was traveling at a high speed on Interstate 40 at the 309 eastbound mile marker. During the pursuit, the driver went onto the shoulder of the road beside a flatbed tractor-trailer. When the Ford driver tried to re-enter the travel lane, the tractor-trailer driver had to move over and ended up colliding with a Hyundai Elantra. The tractor-trailer and Hyundai then both passed through a guardrail, down an embankment, and collided with trees. The Ford Fusion also collided with a guardrail. Emergency workers transported all three drivers as well as a passenger in the Elantra to Cumberland Medical Center for medical treatment. Charges are pending against the driver of the Ford Fusion.

A 2017 report compiled by the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that 351 individuals died due to pursuit-related crashes in 2012 and that from 1996 to 2015 there were 7,000 deaths due to fatal crashes caused by police pursuits. An even larger number of individuals were injured by these chases.
